GREENFIELD With the new deadline for filing federal taxes now May 17, area peace activists are focusing on where the public’s money goes during two vigils this month.
The Tax Day vigils, called by members of Franklin County Continuing the Political Revolution (FCCPR) and the Traprock Center for Peace & Justice, began on Saturday, May 8, and will continue on Saturday, May 15, from 10 a.m. to noon on the Greenfield Common, according to a Traprock press release.
According to Pat Hynes of the Traprock Center for the Peace & Justice, 55 cents of each dollar in taxes “went to support the military, our wars, weapons and bases, including 800 military bases abroad and military operations in an estimated 150 countries. A few pennies of each discretionary tax dollar went to support each of these essential human security needs: environmental protection, education, housing, publ ....

Too much money toward militaries (letter)

While paying their 2020 federal income taxes — of which the War Resisters League says 48% supports the military — might U.S. taxpayers consider the following?
During 2020, world military expenditures increased to $1.981 trillion — with the outlays of the three leading military powers comprising 55% of the global total. The U.S. government increased its military spending to $778 billion in 2020, retaining the top spot among war-preparation funders.
The Chinese government hiked its military spending to $252 billion, while the Russian government raised its military outlay to $61.7 billion.
What could have been done to alleviate the existence of worldwide poverty if, during 2020, the world’s mightiest military powers had not poured nearly $2 trillion into preparations for war? ....

Government funds are not 'taxpayer money'

Do you understand how our tax system works?
OPINION: Rhetoric plays an important role in tax debate and therefore tax policy. If your side manages to gain traction in the public imagination with labels such as “death tax” or “dementia tax”, you have gone a long way to normalising the labels and winning support.
Some truth underpins these particular labels – an estate tax is triggered by a person’s death, and the United Kingdom’s abandoned levy for end-of-life care would have been particularly relevant for dementia sufferers.
Nevertheless, these tags are essentially political messages and we should expect unbiased media to use neutral terminology. Fair reportage would not, for example, repeat the extreme libertarian claim that “tax is theft” – a baseless slogan incompatible with the rule of law. ....
