It was a time of social upheaval and racial discontent. Those in poorer areas didn’t have good access to medical care certainly less than others elsewhere who were wealthier (and typically whiter). Neither did they have the same career opportunities.
In Pittsburgh in the late 1960s and early ’70s, Freedom House Ambulance Service presented a pioneering answer to both problems, training residents of the city’s underserved areas as paramedics to deliver elite prehospital care back to neglected neighborhoods like their own. And while it lasted less than a decade, it demonstrated that with the right resources and will, pipelines could be built to craft worthy candidates in need of a chance into dedicated caregivers that returned quality help to their communities. ....

It’s easy to spend hours down the rabbit holes of the internet, particularly social media apps where algorithm-curated content is filtered just for you. And, some nights after work, I’ll scroll for upwards of an hour on TikTok, a platform I joined in search of foolishness, high-quality sarcasm, and dark humor. As the app got to know me, I was soon being fed astrology skits, cleaning hacks and detailed historical information about racism in America.
The last one was a bit shocking since TikTok broadly offers up viral dances or “put a finger down” challenges, and is generally perceived to be, as one colleague put it, an app for “teenage nonsense.” But the historical video segments were substantive and fascinating. ....

DUII driver hits ambulance; three injured
The teen who hit the ambulance early Saturday morning is cited in the hospital.
Two paramedics and an impaired driver were hospitalized with injuries after a serious crash early Saturday in Northeast Portland.
The impaired driver, Lacorius M. Jenkins, 18, was issued a criminal citation at the hospital for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (DUII) and Reckless Driving.
The ambulance driver and paramedic were not identified.
According to police, at around 12:40 a.m. on March 6, East and Central Precinct officers responded to an emergency signal from an American Medical Response ambulance at East Burnside Street and Northeast Cesar Chavez Boulevard. When they arrived, the officers found the ambulance had been involved in a crash. ....
