Thousands of signatories call on Facebook to reconsider hate speech policy

Thousands of signatories call on Facebook to reconsider hate speech policy
RAMALLAH, Sunday, January 31, 2021 (WAFA) – Hundreds of activists, intellectuals and artists have launched an open letter calling on Facebook to ensure that any amendments to its hate speech policy keep all people safe and connected. The petition was signed by at least 15,000 people until Thursday.
Notable human rights activists and cultural figures such as Hanan Ashrawi, Norita Cortiñas, Wallace Shawn and Peter Gabriel have signed the petition, which notes that if Facebook restricts the usage of the word “Zionist,” it would prevent Palestinians from talking about their daily lives, shield the Israeli government from accountability for human rights violations, and do nothing to make Jewish people safer from anti-Semitism. ....

Human rights activists launched a campaign this week to stop social media giant Facebook from adjusting its hate speech policy to classify the word ‘Zionist’ as a protected category, a move that would make any criticism of Zionism a violation of Facebook’s Community Standards and hate speech policy.
The campaign, entitled “Facebook, we need to talk,” was launched in response to efforts from Zionist organizations, backed by the Israeli government, to get Facebook to consider ‘Zionist” as a proxy for ‘Jew’ or ‘Jewish.’
Facebook is in the process of assessing if posts of a critical nature on their platform that use the term ‘Zionist’ “fall within the rubric of hate speech as per Facebook’s Community Standards,” Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) said in a statement released Wednesday, adding that Facebook could be making a decision by the end of February.  ....

In Canada, the IHRA definition has begun to stifle pro-Palestinian voices

In Canada, the IHRA definition has begun to stifle pro-Palestinian voices
It is no coincidence that the IHRA definition of antisemitism is being advanced in Canada amidst an increasingly hostile environment toward critics of Israel.

In 2019, under the guise of combating racism and bigotry, Canada adopted the highly problematic definition of antisemitism promulgated by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), which conflates political criticism of the state of Israel with anti-Jewish bigotry.
Under this working definition, legitimate critiques of Israel and its policies, such as “claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor,” may be condemned as antisemitic. Many critics have rightly warned that these provisions threaten the free speech rights of Canadians and will likely be used to silence criticism of Israel. ....
