To serve and protect California’s many communities is a daunting responsibility from entry level jobs to the highest elected positions in public safety. Therefore, qualifications to hold these positions are important considerations as those criteria could mean the difference between life and death.
In the California Legislature, there are a few bills being proposed that aim to specify qualifications for those who take the oath to maintain public safety.
One such bill is Senate Bill (SB) 271, also known as the Sheriff Democracy and Diversity Act, authored by Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Sen. Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley). It would allow any registered voter to be eligible to be voted county sheriff in California. ....

Currently, police use of force is investigated by detectives within the same department. Soon, it will be investigated by a team of detectives from multiple agencies except the agency involved in the shooting.
Once the investigation is complete, the process remains the same. The facts of the case are given to the prosecutor in the county where the officers involved in the shooting work, and the prosecutor will determine if the shooting was justified or criminal. ....

BART’s Police Department is committing to six new measures for more equitable policing, including updating its gun use policy, following recommendations from an outside agency in a long-anticipated report published Friday.
The Center for Policing Equity, a research think tank, reviewed BART police data from 2012 to 2017. Its study revealed that BART police were more likely to stop Black people and use force against them. Nearly one in four use-of-force incidents involved police holding or pointing a gun, a majority of times at Black people. ....
