MOTORISTS are warning others after being slapped with a £100 parking charge on an unmarked stretch of road in County Durham.
A number of motorists have warned against making the same mistake after parking on a private road at Thinford Services, near Spennymoor.
The road, which links Costa Coffee and Burger King with the A167, is being monitored 24-hours per day with charges enforced by a private firm.
Anyone who is caught parking on the road is sent a Parking Charge Notice requesting they pay £100, which is discounted to £60 if paid within the first 14 days. ....

Temporary Disability Grants that were supposed to lapse from February 2020 were extended to 31 December 2020 in order to cushion affected beneficiaries against the pressures brought about by the State of National Disaster and the subsequent lockdown. The cost of continuing to pay these grants totalled in excess of R1,5 billion.
To have continued payment of the grants until end March 2021 would have cost an additional R1,2 billion, which funds are not available.
A disability grant may be awarded as either a permanent grant, which may or may not be subject to a medical review after a certain period of time. Permanent disability grants are awarded for conditions which impact on the applicant’s ability to work for a period longer than 12 months. Where the disability or medical condition is likely to improve with treatment or other interventions, the grant may be awarded for a temporary period of between six and 12 months. Disability activists in Makhanda have labelled the suspension of temporary disability grants as a violation of human rights.
The South African Social Security Agency has suspended temporary disability grants from the start of 2021. SASSA says the high cost involved, and the need to comply with the law, forced them into this “challenging” decision.
Temporary Disability Grants due to lapse in February 2020 were extended to 31 December 2020 because of the national coronavirus lockdown. At the end of December 2020, SASSA suspended a total of 210 778 disability grants nationally.
Explaining the decision in a statement on 7 January 2021, SASSA said temporary disability grants paid during lockdown had cost the state more than R1.5 billion. Continuing to pay them until the end of March 2021 would cost an additional R1.2 billion. ....
