Italy: Two people arrested for exploiting migrant farmworkers

Police in northeastern Italy have arrested two people accused of exploiting dozens of Pakistani migrant farmworkers. The laborers were reportedly underpaid, had to work without any coronavirus protections, and forced to pay for rooms in extremely run-down buildings.
Police in the Veneto region arrested two Pakistani nationals on Wednesday. They are accused of exploitating dozens of fellow Pakistani nationals.
An investigation into their operation was conducted between October and February after checks at agricultural businesses in the provinces around the cities of Treviso, Pordenone and Udine near Venice, in northeastern Italy led to the discovery of a business headquartered in Cessalto (Treviso) that recruited Pakistani farmworkers. ....

Postponed: Trial of mother and daughter charged with trafficking Cambodian domestic helper


BUTTERWORTH: The trial of a mother and daughter jointly charged with trafficking their Cambodian domestic helper for the purpose of exploitation through forced labour has been postponed to May.
Sessions Court Judge Noor Aini Yusof set May 19 for case management and ordered that bail for Teoh Beng Sim, 57, and Teh Hooi Fung, 36, be extended during their case mention on Monday (April 19).
On March 19, Teoh and Teh pleaded not guilty to trafficking the 27-year-old victim for the purpose of exploitation by use of force at a house in Jalan Perpaduan, Kampung Baru, in Bukit Mertajam, at about 10.45pm on Feb 24.
They were jointly charged under Section 13 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) Act 2007, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code. ....

The Sindh High Court has observed that the minimum wage policy has not helped increase the income of domestic workers or protected them from exploitation by their employers.
Disposing of a petition seeking the payment of the minimum wage to all janitorial workers of the cantonment boards in Karachi, a division bench comprising Justice Mohammad Shafi Siddiqui and Adnan-ul-Karim Memon observed that the janitorial staff (sweepers) working on daily wages or a contract basis got a little amount per month.
The court observed that the enforcement of the minimum wage law is not the only problem for the time being; the sheer injustice and massive exploitation of the legal rights of hard-working unskilled minimum wage workers is also an issue. ....
