Pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the Council on Environmental Quality NEPA Regulations (Code of Federal Regulations, Title 40, Parts 1500-1508), the Department of Defense, Washington Headquarters Services (WHS) has issued a Draft Environmental Assessment (DEA) for the construction of the Pentagon Remote Delivery Facility (RDF) Roof Structural Strengthening Project.
To meet the needs of the military branches that operate flights at the Pentagon, the RDF Roof must support certain helicopter vehicle weights under both landing and operation conditions. The Project would enhance the structural integrity of the RDF Roof and convert the Pentagon Heliport (located on the RDF Roof) into a permanent facility that sustains the safe operations of aircraft. ....

In addition to the wall, which would be about 8 feet higher than the point where tides begin to flood the city, there would be gates to keep roads, waterways and pedestrian paths open when the area is dry, and pumps to try and move rainfall outside the wall’s perimeter when those gates are closed.
The proposed wall, first unveiled in April 2020, was
adjusted by the Corps earlier this year in response to its first round of reactions from locals, interest groups and federal agencies.
A 4,000-foot-long breakwater south of the downtown peninsula was scrapped; that brought the total cost for a roughly 8-mile wall around the city to about $1.4 billion, though a more detailed cost estimate is expected at the end of the summer. If constructed, the federal government would pay 65 percent of the cost, and the city of Charleston would pay the remaining 35 percent. ....

Camp Umatilla wins award

HERMISTON â The Oregon National Guard has been recognized for its cultural resources management at Camp Umatilla.
The guard received the Environmental Security Award for Cultural Resources Management for the 2020 fiscal year from the Army National Guard for its work in preserving the historical aspects of the site while upgrading it into a modern training facility.
Camp Umatilla is located west of Hermiston on part of the former Umatilla Chemical Depot. The army depot opened in 1941 as the United States prepared to enter World War II, and began storing chemical weapons in 1962. It was decommissioned in 2015, with parts preserved for Camp Umatilla, a wildlife refuge and industrial development. ....
