Lewes Beach residents sound off on proposed ordinances

Friday, February 12, 2021
Lewes Beach residents used their opportunity to speak at a May 3 public hearing to discourage mayor and city council from passing two controversial ordinances aimed at addressing sea-level rise and source water protection.
The ordinances could be considered for a vote by council as early as Monday, May 17; however, Mayor Ted Becker hedged by saying the May 8 election could affect council’s readiness to move forward.
While many residents agreed with the spirit of the ordinances, they said the new regulations would hinder their property rights and significantly impact property values on Lewes Beach.
The Sussex County Association of Realtors joined with residents in opposition, submitting a letter opposing both proposed ordinances on the basis that they infringe on property rights for about 1,200 property owners. ....

Transgender Athletes Bill, Bats Caught In A Development Controversy, New River New History

Development and the environment sometimes it’s a tough balance to make in South Florida.
One of the latest controversies is at the Calusa Country Club in West Kendall. The club has been closed down since 2011. The land has become an open space and many people living around it love it that way.
There was a covenant that required it to remain a golf course until 2067. But the real estate development company GL Homes, along with Bacardí, won the right to build 33 homes on the property
last October. They’ve petitioned to build a gated community with 550 single-family homes.
“It s 168 acres of beautiful, tranquil green space. And the rest of the homes and community are really built around it,” said Amanda Prieto, a leader with the ....

Blue Green algae is present at the Pahokee Marina and is very toxic

PAHOKEE The bloom spread like an aging bruise at the Pahokee Marina this month, turning green goo on the water’s surface to shades of teal as cyanobacteria cells broke open, releasing toxins 100 times higher than what’s considered harmful to humans.
In the nooks and crannies along the edges of Lake Okeechobee, algae-sensing NOAA satellite images tell a similar story or show there’s potential for a blue-green algae bloom as summer days stretch and temperatures warm.
On Wednesday morning, Florida Department of Environmental Protection water test results from the marina came back showing 860 parts per billion, or ppb, of the toxin microcystin – a potent poison that can kill pets that swim in it and cause respiratory, skin and digestion problems in humans. A mid-April toxin reading of 120 ppb was measured at Port Mayaca.  ....
