B.C. landmark tourism attractions eligible for up to $1 million in pandemic grants


VICTORIA The B.C. government is offering up to $1-million grants to help anchor attractions and tour bus operators survive the pandemic and ramp up operations when it s safe to do so. 
Premier John Horgan and Tourism Minister Melanie Mark said they believe the $50-million BC Major Anchor Attractions Program is enough to prevent any of those not-for-profits and businesses on the edge from going under.
Few sectors have been hit as hard by COVID-19 as tourism, Horgan told a news conference Tuesday. 
Anchor attractions have ripple effects on the economy as visitors stay in hotels, eat at restaurants and shop in the area, while also offering employment opportunities, especially for youth, he added.  ....

Science World and the Pacific National Exhibition are among the anchor B.C. attractions expected to receive up to $1 million each from a $50 million program announced by the province Tuesday to prop up struggling tourism operators.
However, Vancouver’s mayor said the funding leaves the PNE “critically short” of the $8-million bailout it needs to survive.

The B.C. major anchor attractions grant will provide $1 million in funding to anchor attractions that typically get at least 75,000 visitors a year and $500,000 to rural tourism attractions that get 15,000 visitors a year, Premier John Horgan and Tourism Minister Melanie Mark said during a news conference on Tuesday. VICTORIA Further help is on the way for British Columbia’s struggling tourism sector. 
B.C. Premier John Horgan and Tourism Minister Melanie Mark are set to announce more support today for the sector that’s lobbied the province for greater aid as it grapples with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A group of four tourism and hospitality industry associations reacted to B.C.’s budget announced last month, saying in a news release at the time that tourism-related spending was welcome, but it may not be enough to save some businesses before ongoing travel restrictions are lifted. ....
