The Importance of Electoral Politics in Social Change Movements - San Francisco Bay Times

The Importance of Electoral Politics in Social Change Movements
Mandy Carter
By Mandy Carter–
I wonder how many of us could ever have thought that we would have our first-ever woman, and woman of color, as our vice-president? I sure didn’t at first.
That was until I remembered having had the good fortune of working on the historic election of our first-ever Black president, Barack Obama, in his 2008 presidential election campaign.
As an out Black lesbian and lifelong Democrat, I count myself fortunate to have worked on two winning historic campaigns that proactively engaged our LGBTQ+ communities. In 2008, soon-to-be President Obama formed Obama Pride with five national co-chairs for his national LGBT leadership team. They included myself of Durham, NC; Marsha Botzer of Seattle, WA; Jesse Garcia of Dallas, TX; Campbell Spencer of Washington, DC; and Eric Stern of Berkeley, CA. ....

Philosophy as public service | UNC-Chapel Hill

Not his real name.
James is among 120 Polk Correctional Institution offenders, ages 18 and older, who have enrolled during the past three years in either for-credit or noncredit courses in which philosophy faculty, graduate students and undergraduates correspond or teach. His behavior in prison caused his transfer to the Butner, North Carolina, facility’s most secure unit. Now, philosophy offers James a chance for reflection to counteract his limited social contact.
Fulfilling the University’s public service mission
Prison-outreach is just one program in a historically robust array offered by the College of Arts & Sciences’ philosophy department. Carolina philosophers also hold discussion groups in retirement communities, engage high school students in nearby counties and involve UNC-Chapel Hill undergraduate and graduate students in the outreach. It’s all part of the department’s efforts to fulfill the University’s mission of public service. ....

WAYNESVILLE, North Carolina (WLOS) Last week, five chainsaws were stolen from a firewood ministry in Waynesville.
Richard Reeves uses those saws to cut wood to help those in need stay warm in the winter.
As soon as word got out, dozens of people contacted him wanting to help.
Several people came by to donate replacement saws. Reeves is up to 10 now more than he can use so Reeves asks that anyone still wanting to help contribute money towards the firewood ministry’s cause.
That money will go to a shed so he can lock up his saws and prevent any sort of future theft. He said he’s so thankful to people who live in the area. ....

Restaurant Capacity Increases In Buncombe County
(Buncombe County, NC) Buncombe County restaurants are being allowed to increase capacity again. Commission chair Brownie Newman signed a declaration this week that recommends a cap of 50-percent indoor dining, which aligns with the state s measures. Buncombe restaurants had previously been under a 30-percent capacity for several weeks. A report of lower community spread of COVID-19 was key in the county s decision.
North Carolina s Senators Say Impeachment Trial Is Unconstitutional
(Washington, DC) North Carolina s Senators are joining other Republicans in opposing the impeachment trial of former President Trump. Richard Burr and Thom Tillis both said the trial would be unconstitutional, during a procedural vote at the U.S. Capitol yesterday. The vote failed, as five GOP members joined 50 Democratic Senators in support of the trial s constitutionality. It does point to the larger fac ....

Hundreds of native tuna/eels, some up to 60-years-old, have been rescued from Whites Pit at Ohoka in the past two months as the huge waterhole dries up.
About 200 were rescued prior to Christmas and several hundred since as dry conditions reduced the pit to a large mud puddle.
In a last-ditch effort to protect those that had burrowed deeply into the mud, the Swannanoa Fire Brigade was called in to pour a truck-load of water in to help protect those remaining. ....
