'This is community': Mourners remember Elijah Hawkins, 8, with candlelight vigil

This is community : Mourners remember Elijah Hawkins, 8, with candlelight vigil
York Dispatch
A crowd of about 100 people gathered in West York Thursday evening to remember a boy who lost his life after a house fire on July 3.
Mourners traveled to West Poplar Terrace to attend a candlelight vigil for Elijah Hawkins, 8.
People bowed their heads and held lit candles during a moment of silence for Elijah. Afterward, those in attendance visited a memorial site set up outside the remnants of the Hawkins family home, some leaving behind toys, candles and other items to remember Elijah. Others signed posters and wrote messages to him and his family.  ....

Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust grants £10,000 to St Mary's in Oxenhope for urgent roof repairs

A CHURCH in Oxenhope is celebrating after receiving £10,000 from the Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust for urgent roof repair works.
St Mary the Virgin is a Grade II listed church, with links to the Brontes and it was was granted the funding at a recent committee which saw more than £50,000 allocated to ten of the region’s most vulnerable places of worship.
The YHCT works to ensure these places of worship are kept in good repair, recognising the contribution they make to society at large and the support they provide to local communities, especially over the past year.
Reverend Cat Thatcher, vicar of Oxenhope, said: “We are delighted to receive this generous grant from Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust. With it we are able to undertake repairs to the roof, and at the same time to have the roof insulated. This will not only make the building warmer, particularly in winter, but will also contribute to the reduction of our carbon footprint, which is something ....

Needham History: Baptist Church celebrates 165 years in Needham

This week, April 27 marks the 165th anniversary of the organization of the Baptist Church in Needham.
This is, of course, an event to be celebrated within the congregation. But it is also important to the town as a whole since it lies at the convergence of two important events that created the downtown as we now know it.
The first event is the amendment to the MA Constitution in 1833 that ended taxation to support the established church. Massachusetts was the last state to sever the ties between church and state (no, it didn’t automatically happen in 1776).
In Massachusetts, going back to the early 1600s, the definition of a “Town” was a church, a school, and the tax base to pay the minister’s salary. The church was literally the foundation of the town and the concept of the separation of church and state would have been purely meaningless to these folks. ....
