Virginia Passes Second Bill to Protect Wildlife Corridors Posted by Staff | Feb 25, 2021 | News | | RICHMOND, Va. (February 24, 2021) The Virginia General Assembly yesterday passed critical legislation to protect wildlife corridors and help keep drivers safer. This bill, SB 1274, builds on the wildlife corridor legislation that passed last year, creating a comprehensive program to identify wildlife corridors, protect motorists from collisions with animals, and address barriers to wildlife movement. The bill passed with strong bipartisan support. SB 1274 directs key agencies to incorporate wildlife corridors and road crossings into their planning across Virginia. This legislation builds on the successful wildlife corridor legislation passed last year which directed the Commonwealth to produce a Wildlife Corridor Action Plan (WCAP) to identify important wildlife corridors and road crossings. According to a news release from the SCLT, the community answered to the tune of 172 donations which resulted in over $109,000 that will be used to support SCLT projects and operations in 2021. “It is wonderful to know so many kind, caring friends answered the challenge of Pam and John Standish,” SCLT President Susan Holmes said. “Thank you to all of our friends who supported the Sheridan Community Land Trust this holiday season. The Butts County Board of Education honored the Butts County Life Enrichment Team (LET) and community sponsors for their efforts to aid students during this unusual time. LET Executive Director Ann-Marie Pope coordinated a challenge of collecting money and supplies to be able to send home with every students in the system (3,435) a bag that included a digital thermometer, hand sanitizer, wash cloth, bar soap, face covering, and pamphlets about staying safe during the pandemic and available community resources.
