Razing a relic: smokestack, one of only pieces left of Crompton Mill, is demolished


WEST WARWICK — On a sliver of land bordered by Pulaski Street and the Pawtuxet River, a longtime symbol of Crompton’s roots as a mill village no longer stands. 
“It’s bittersweet,” Jason Licciardi, councilor of West Warwick’s Ward 4, where the old Crompton Mill smokestack was located, said of watching as the piece of the past was knocked down Wednesday. “This is history that we’re living right now.”
The West Warwick Town Council began to discuss razing the approximately 120-foot-tall smokestack last year amid concerns over the structure’s safety. Surrounded by occupied buildings — Lil Rhody Storage sits only some 30 feet from it — and situated beside a somewhat heavily-trafficked road, Public Works Director Don Ouellette warned during a recent council meeting that the tower, which had cracked bricks and was leaning, could fall at any time. An engineer had also deemed the chimney structurally unsafe.  ....

Police track down Jackson man tied to drug deals in several towns

A Jackson man is in some serious trouble after police found him in possession of Heroin, Cocaine, Molly/MDMA, prescription pills, digital scales, drug paraphernalia and a 9mm and .40 caliber handgun with high capacity magazines.
An investigation began by Stafford Police with their Drug Enforcement Unit along with the Ocean County Prosecutor s Office Narcotics Strike Force and as more information became available, the probe led Detectives to Brick and Absecon.
Police executed search warrants at a storage facility and vehicle in Brick and in a hotel room in Absecon and found the drugs.
Cory Winston, 30, was arrested and charged with 14 offenses including 1st degree possession of “Molly” aka MDMA, 2nd Degree Possession of Heroin, 2nd Degree Possession of Cocaine, 2 charges of Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, Possession of Handgun during a CDS offense, Possession of High Capacity Magazine, Resisting Arrest, Aggravated Assault on a Police Of ....

Proposed alley project re-imagines appearance, use


LIGONIER — The Ligonier Redevelopment commission got an imagined first look at a design concept for its proposed alley project in the 100 block of Cavin Street.
Rick Johnson of the street department handed out artist’s renderings of some of the features the alley could have. The concept drawings show brightly colored triangular sails for shade and decorative lighting, storefront motifs, benches and a brick surface actually made from stamped concrete.
Johnson said there are original bricks in the alley, covered by asphalt. He said removing the asphalt might loosen or damage the bricks. Stamped concrete could provide an alternative material to create the look of brick. ....
