Advocates Praise Vermont Legislature's Passage Of Voter Access Bill

The Vermont Senate on Tuesday gave final approval and sent to the governor’s desk a proposal that allows voting by mail in all general elections in the state.
The bill makes permanent provisions that were put in place for the November 2020 election as pandemic safety precautions.  Government Operations Committee Chair Senator Jeanette White, a Windham County Democrat, asked the chamber to accept House changes and pass the bill.  
“If you will remember S.15 is the bill that allows mail out voting for the general election, White said. And Senate Government Operations voted to accept the changes, to confer with the changes as provided by the other Chamber and we ask  for the support of the Senate.” ....

Vermont Business Magazine Today, the Vermont Legislature sent to the governor, S15, a bill which makes universally mailed ballots a permanent feature of Vermont’s general elections. The bill also allows voters to fix or “cure” a ballot if it has been deemed defective. At his Tuesday press briefing, Governor Scott said he would sign the bill once it received the usual legal vetting and reached his desk. He also said he hopes that this type of voting will be expanded to all types of elections.
The general election typically gets the highest percentage of the electorate involved, but it is the local elections which sometimes draw scant turnout. He said this kind of ease-of-voting option for local elections could increase participation. ....

Michigan lawmakers would be explicitly barred from voting on issues they have a personal interest in under legislation that passed the House with wide bipartisan support Thursday.
Sponsored by Rep. Pamela Hornberger, House Bill 4001 would prohibit state lawmakers from voting on bills or other measures that could personally benefit them, their families or any entities in which they have a stake. ....

A Michigan House committee took up a proposal that would require lawmakers to disclose their personal finances Tuesday, debating the merits of a plan that would subject elected officials to new disclosure requirements without allowing the public to see it until they’re out of office.
The legislation, House Bills 4680 through 4686, would compel lawmakers to submit financial information for themselves and immediate family members including income sources over $5,000, properties valued over $50,000 excluding their primary residence, and stocks, bonds and annuities valued at $10,000 or more to a new, permanent legislative ethics committee in their chamber. ....
