It worked. Credit: Fort Worth Star-Telegram Texas House Democrats pose for a photo in 2003 outside of the hotel they fled to in Oklahoma to run out the clock on the regular session that year. Redistricting is done every 10 years, and Democrats were displeased that Republicans wanted to redraw voting lines not even halfway through the decade. That s elected officials choosing the voters and not voters choosing their elected officials, Dunnam said. There needed to be an awareness about what was going to happen. Us going to Oklahoma ended up going national and international. It was almost inevitable that former Gov. Rick Perry would call a special session to push the legislation through to his desk. ....
TALLAHASSEE State Sen. Randolph Bracy, an Orlando Democrat who pushed to revamp Florida’s criminal justice laws while in the Legislature, will run for the central Florida congressional seat now held by Rep. Val Demings. Bracy’s move represents yet another ripple effect caused by Demings decision to challenge U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio in 2022. The 44-year-old Bracy becomes the first to publicly announce his intention to run for Demings seat, although former local prosecutor Aramis Ayala strongly hinted last week that she too would run for the 10th Congressional District seat. Brady has an advantage since his Orange County state Senate seat makes up 80 percent of the congressional district. ....
Randolph Bracy announces bid for FL CD 10 Democratic Sen. Randolph Bracy on Tuesday announced what many Central Florida Democrats have been awaiting: He is running for Congress to succeed Rep. Val Demings. POLITICO first reported Bracy’s candidacy Tuesday afternoon. He then began sharing his plans with other media to win Demings’ seat representing Florida’s 10th Congressional District, which covers much of western Orange County, the same as Bracy’s state Senate district. “I’m running for Congress,” he said. “I’ve served this community now for almost 10 years. I love this community. “And I believe I can serve this community well in Congress. Many of the issues that I’ve been fighting on, justice and equity, the real debate is going on in Washington right now,” Bracy said. “I’ve sponsored and passed a police reform bill. They’re debating one right now and can’t come to an agreement. This is just an example.” ....
House Speaker Dade Phalen on the House floor. With time dwindling on the legislative session, the Texas House is breaking until Sunday, in an attempt to send the Senate a clear message: Pass our priority bills or see your own legislation die slowly in our chamber. House lawmakers expressed frustration Thursday that some of their priority legislation had not moved in the upper chamber, including a package of health care and criminal justice reform bills pushed by House Speaker Dade Phelan. “If the [Texas] Senate wants to kill or sit on important bills sent over by the House, they can expect the same in return. Starting today,” Rep. Jeff Leach, R-Plano, tweeted Thursday morning. “As a wise House colleague once said, ‘The Senate can respect us. Or expect us.’” ....
