Missouri’s governor pledges to move forward with Medicaid expansion; state employee pay raise proposed
Missouri’s governor delivered an unprecedented State of the State Address on Wednesday afternoon in Jefferson City, in the Missouri Senate chamber.

Missouri House and Senate GOP leaders announced earlier in the day that the governor would deliver the speech in the Senate chamber. The speech is always delivered in the Missouri House chamber, across the Rotunda. House Speaker Rob Vescovo, R-Arnold, Senate President Pro Tem Dave Schatz, R-Sullivan, and other legislative leaders say the speech was moved from the House chamber to ensure that attendees could meet CDC guidelines recommending six feet of social distancing. ....

Missouri law is clear that it is illegal to have gambling machines outside of a casino. 
Yet in bars, gas stations and other gathering spots around the state, games similar to slot machines have been popping up for years. 
So why, despite outcry from some lawmakers, law enforcement and state regulators, has Missouri been hesitant to crack down on these machines?
It’s a question Senate President Pro Tem Dave Schatz, R-Sullivan, hopes to put to rest. 
On Thursday, he set off once again on his annual push to rid the state of these so-called grey-market games, presenting a bill to the Senate’s committee on government accountability and fiscal oversight that would grant the Missouri Gaming Commission authority to go after these machines. ....

House speaker declares education reform a top priority for Missouri legislative session


As a new legislative session kicks off, education reform will be a top issue for lawmakers to tackle, Missouri House Speaker Rob Vescovo declared Wednesday.
Lawmakers from across the state returned to the Capitol in Jefferson City Wednesday afternoon, where they swore in members and elected Vescovo, a Republican from Arnold, as speaker.
With the coronavirus still spreading throughout the state resulting in thousands of new cases each day, the first day of the 2021 legislative session felt its impact with normally bustling halls eerily empty and House members sworn in in batches, limiting the amount of people in the Chamber at once. ....

Monday’s inauguration in Jefferson City kicks off celebration of 200 years of Missouri history
About 2,000 people are expected to attend Monday’s inauguration ceremonies at the Missouri Capitol in Jefferson City. The festivities will help kick off the historic celebration of 200 years of Missouri history.

State Rep. Ron Hicks, R-Defiance, plans to bring his children to the 2021 Bicentennial inauguration ceremony.
“That’s one of the exciting things about being a part of this, not just for myself but my family. I have two young boys and for them to be parts of history and things and then learn about it, this is just an amazing experience,” Hicks says. ....
