SANTA FE – New Mexico lawmakers can expect a clean fuel standard on their 2022 agenda – a priority Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s administration pitched Monday as a matter of economic development.
The proposal would require a 10% reduction in the carbon intensity of fuel used for transportation by 2030 and 28% by 2040. ....

Tension climbs as NM awaits federal funds

SANTA FE – The latest round of federal stimulus funding – $1.75 billion for New Mexico – hasn’t hit the state government’s bank account yet.
But partisan tension over how to handle the money is escalating.
House Republicans and Democrats this week exchanged letters over how the Legislature should respond to Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s line-item vetoes of part of the state budget – a dispute that includes her rejection of legislative plans for allocating some of the federal money.

House Republicans are pushing the Legislative Council – a panel of top-ranking lawmakers – to convene an immediate meeting to debate how to respond to the budget vetoes. ....

New Mexico freshman senators reflect on first months in Legislature


DEMING – During the winter legislative session in Santa Fe, state lawmakers unanimously approved a new rural equity ombudsman position to serve as a liaison between rural communities and the governor’s office, Legislature, state agencies and local governments and nonprofit organizations.
Both of the bill s sponsors in the Senate Democrat Siah Correa Hemphill of Silver City and Republican Crystal Diamond of Elephant Butte were among the freshman class of New Mexico lawmakers in a year when women hold a majority of seats in the House and a record high number of seats in the Senate as well. 
One of the bill s House sponsors, state Rep. Luis Terrazas, R-Silver City, was a newcomer to the Roundhouse as well.  ....

Ethics Commission solicits redistricting applicants


The applicants must fit certain criteria:
Two of the ethics commission appointees cannot be members of the Democratic or Republican parties. But independents, Libertarians and members of minor parties may apply.
The third ethics commission appointee must be a retired Court of Appeals judge or Supreme Court justice, who will serve as chair of the redistricting panel.
The commission is set to interview applicants and make its selections June 4. The new redistricting law goes into effect July 1.
The legislation calls for the seven-member group to hold a series of public meetings and propose new maps for New Mexico’s congressional and legislative districts. ....
