Calls Continue To Better Fund Tick-Borne Disease Research

With the COVID pandemic coming under control, lawmakers in the Hudson Valley and other Lyme disease hotspots hope attention, and money, return to tick-borne disease education and research.
It seems ticks were out in greater force in the spring than in recent history.
“The early data from our area in the Hudson Valley suggests that, at least for black-legged ticks, this is a greater than normal year,” says Ostfeld. “An average year is dangerous, and this is even more dangerous in 2021.”
Especially, says Dr. Rick Ostfeld, the nymph-stage tick, which was active in June and poses the greatest risk of disease transmission to people.  On a personal note, Ostfeld says he also is seeing many more dog ticks. Republican state Senator Sue Serino also notices a tick surge. ....

Cuomo's court nominees approved, but faced scrutiny from the left and the right

Nominee Madeline Singas, the Nassau County district attorney, faced some tough questions from senators on the left and right. In the end, Singas and the governor’s other judicial appointees, won approval in the Senate. 
Cuomo nominated Singas and Anthony Cannataro, the administrative judge in New York City’s Civil Court, to fill vacancies at the state’s Court of Appeals, New York’s highest court. Cannataro, who is openly gay, would replace the late Judge Paul Feinman, who was the first openly gay person to serve on the court. Singas faced the more intense scrutiny.  ....

The New York State Senate’s Judiciary Committee held, what was at times, a contentious confirmation hearing for Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s nominees to the state’s highest court. 
Nominee Madeline Singas, the Nassau County district attorney, faced some tough questions from senators on the left and right. In the end, Singas and the governor’s other judicial appointees, won approval in the Senate.

FOIL DENIAL CONFIRMS FEBRUARY SECRET MEETING UNDER INVESTIGATION

ALBANY, NY Senator Sue Serino announced today that the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request she filed regarding the secret meeting between the Governor’s top officials and members of the Legislature regarding the cover-up of COVID-19 nursing home deaths has been officially denied.
The denial letter comes months after a written copy of the transcript was released publicly by the Administration. Notably, it was Senator Serino’s ask for the release of any records or recordings pertaining to the meeting that triggered the denial. In a letter, the FOIL officer argued this portion of the request is problematic saying:  ....
