Critical Infrastructure: Solar carports anchor microgrids at facilities that need them most


The basic purpose of a microgrid is to island the user facility be it a hospital or fire station from the utility grid when brown-outs or black-outs are at play (which are becoming more common). While the regulated utilities claim a need for state approval for billions of dollars worth of grid improvements to avoid these outages both planned and unplanned such improvements, if approved, are not likely to be evenly distributed.
Utility grid “investments are unlikely to be made in areas with low population density but that are likely high risk for outages. This type of situation could be aptly addressed by DER (distributed energy resources), within microgrids or as standalone resources,” observes a February 2021 report from the California Energy Commission on DER planning. ....

COVID vaccines: CentraState gives walk-in shots Wednesday in Freehold


FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP - Faced with dwindling demand for vaccines, CentraState Medical Center said it will provide COVID-19 vaccines to walk-in patients on Wednesday.
The hospital will offer the first dose of Pfizer-BioNTech shots between 8 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and again between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the hospital s Star and Barry Tobias Ambulatory Campus, Entrance 6, 901 W. Main Street (Route 537). Freehold Township.
The move marks a shift in strategy. Up until now, CentraState, which serves Monmouth, Ocean and Mercer counties, has provided 55,000 COVID vaccine doses through appointments.
The change comes as health providers race to deliver enough shots to stay ahead of variants of the COVID disease that are potentially more contagious. New Jersey is trying to vaccinate 70% of adults, or 4.7 million people, by June 30. ....

The last time Paulo Santos traveled between two hospitals, critically ill with COVID-19, he was transported by ambulance, his survival very much in doubt.

KDC Solar turns on carport at CentraState Medical in New Jersey

KDC Solar LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of CI Renewables LLC, commenced commercial operations of its 1.6-MW solar carport at CentraState Medical in Freehold, N.J. The new system will generate approximately 2.1 million kWh of solar electricity per year. This is the equivalent of approximately 253 homes being supplied with all their electricity for a year.

Together with the 7 MW ground mount system, commissioned in 2014 and the 3.9 MW solar carport system, commissioned in 2019, all developed and built by KDC Solar, CentraState Medical has the highest percentage of solar electricity of any hospital in the State of New Jersey. Collectively, these solar systems provide 70% of CentraState’s annual electric requirements. These solar projects are also one of the largest solar distributed generation facilities providing electricity to any hospital on the East Coast of the United States. ....
