Despite widespread criticism that trailed its earlier reprimand of Channels TV for granting leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has finally asked Channels Television to pay a fine of N5 million for breaching the broadcast code.
Also fined N5million alongside Channels Television is Inspiration FM Lagos.
Recall that the Commission had last week queried Channels Television after Emma Powerful, a leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was interviewed on its live programme, ‘‘Politics Today’’, on Monday, April 26th. ....

The Nigerian Guild of Editors has Friday rejected the N5m ( five million naira) fine imposed on Channels Television and Inspiration FM respectively by the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, for alleged infractions, describing it as punitive.
The Guild of Editors described the NBC as playing the role of an accuser, the prosecutor and the judge insisted that both stations involved haven’t been given enough time to defend themselves.
Recall Vanguard had reported that NBC imposed a 5million naira fine on Channels Television for an alleged infraction of the NBC broadcast code after ChannelsTV interviewed the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra’s spokesperson, Mr Emma Powerful on its politics programme, Politics Today. ....

Despite widespread criticism that trailed its earlier reprimand of Channels TV for granting leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has finally asked Channels Television to pay a fine of N5 million for breaching the broadcast code.

Recall that the Commission had last week queried Channels Television after Emma Powerful, a leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was interviewed on its live programme, ‘‘Politics Today’’, on Monday, April 26th.

Following the news of its action, NBC faced wide condemnation by many Nigerians who viewed the alleged suspension of Channels TV by NBC as an attack on media freedom and independence. ....

Self-defence: We rather die in battle than bow to terrorists - Fani-Kayode vows

Following the deteriorating security situation in the country, a former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode has declared his stance on a call for self-defence, vowing that it’s better to die in the war against the insurgents than to bow as a coward.
DAILY POST reports that some concerned Nigerians have recently urged citizens to devise means of defending themselves during attacks.
Recall that the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom had several times urged President Muhammadu Buhari to license arm for citizens to defend themselves when they are made vulnerable by the attackers.
