Cherokee Heritage Center prepares for 50th annual Trail of Tears Art Show and Sale


PARK HILL – Artwork is being accepted for the 50th annual Trail of Tears Art Show and Sale, hosted by the Cherokee Heritage Center.
The longest-running Native American art show and competition in Oklahoma will be presented July 2-31, both virtually and in person.
“The Trail of Tears Art Show and Sale has a longstanding reputation for excellence that artists, collectors and fans have come to expect throughout the years,” Callie Chunestudy, cultural tourism coordinator, said. “While CHC remains closed to the public, we’ve worked hard to expand and enhance our virtual platform from last year, and we’re excited to also safely welcome back visitors who prefer to see the art in person. With so much going on in the world, there’s certainly no lack of inspiration, and we’re looking forward to seeing what stories these artists will share with us this year.” ....

Veronica Redding has helped many of her fellow Native Americans find photos of ancestors at the Oklahoma History Center. Imagine her delight when she stumbled across an Osage Council photo that featured her third-great-grandfather, Olo-hah-walla.
Redding had seen a family copy of the photo while tracing her own roots. But not until she became a researcher at the Oklahoma Historical Society Research Center did she know it was part of the center’s collection. ....

New Cherokee National Historical Society conducts inaugural meeting


TAHLEQUAH – Seven Cherokee Nation citizens conducted the inaugural meeting of the newly formed Cherokee National Historical Society on March 11.                                                   
The creation of a new Cherokee National Historical Society is a component of the Cherokee Heritage Center Act of 2020, which was unanimously approved by the Tribal Council and signed into law on Sept. 24 by Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. 
As part of the act, the former historical society established in 1963 is dissolving and transferred all assets, including the iconic CHC and the site’s 44 acres, buildings, equipment, collections and historical documents to the CN.
The act also received the unanimous endorsement of the original CNHS, which will wind down operations and dissolve in the coming months. Since Septe ....
