They oralist movement s aim was to teach the deaf to speak and extinguish the use of American Sign Language in the face of growing evidence that focusing on speaking orally often came at the additional expense of all other education, causing serious harm to brain development. Despite being a relatively overlooked month in the public imagination, one of those key dates holds local significance. Deaf History Month begins by commemorating the March 13, 1988, Deaf President Now movement’s successful push to make I. King Jordan the first deaf president of Gallaudet University, the world’s only university specifically for students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Another key date Deaf History Month recognizes is April 8, 1864, when President Abraham Lincoln signed the charter for Gallaudet University in Washington D.C., more than 100 years before that university had its first deaf president. ....
Nyle DiMarco Is Doing a TV Show Inspired By His Life For NBC 2021 is clearly the year of DiMarco as producer. This year, Nyle DiMarco went behind the camera with his Netflix show Deaf U. That series followed a handful of students at Gallaudet University, the nation s premier institution of higher education for deaf and hard of hearing students. For the project, Dimarco, who is a graduate of Gallaudet, served as executive producer. He must have liked the gig: the Announced this weekend, it was announced that the Look at Me. That project is currently being developed by NBC and is about a multi-generational deaf family, living under one roof.
