DETROIT – It was almost exactly a year ago when a wave of COVID patients was starting to overwhelm hospitals.
A Metro Detroit nurse took a video inside Sinai Grace Hospital and spoke about the need for more supplies.
Local 4 Defender Shawn Ley spoke with Kenisa Barkai. She said she has found new ways to help in the fight against COVID-19.
Last year, Barkai said that she was drawing attention to the hospital and trying to make it clear that they needed more PPE and beds for what she foresaw as a wave of COVID patients that were about to hit. The hospital said that the cellphone video violated hospital policy and Barkai was fired. ....

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - Healthcare workers in Alabama have treated thousands of COVID-19 patients since March 2020. Nurses working in the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Huntsville Hospital say every experience has been a new challenge over the last year.

Hospitalizations spiked in June/July 2020 and December 2020 into January 2021. Nurses in Huntsville Hospital’s MICU began treating COVID-19 patients last year, and the unit became a care unit for those battling the potentially deadly disease. ....

World in Progress: Travel nurses to the rescue?
Travel nurses fill gaps in hospitals that need more hands on deck. During the pandemic, many medical staff themselves became sick or had to quarantine. St. Vincent Hospital nurses in Worcester, Mass. in second week of strike for safe staffing ratios
Nurses at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts, have entered their second week of an ongoing strike. They are demanding that Tenet Healthcare, which owns St. Vincent Hospital, agree to establish strict ratios for safer patient and workplace conditions. The roughly 700 nurses on the picket line, members of the Massachusetts Nurses Association, have been joined by other health care workers, including personal care assistants (PCA), pulmonary technicians and housekeepers, who face similarly dangerous conditions at the hospital.
On February 10 the nurses gave 89 percent approval to authorize a strike. Negotiations resumed the next day but quickly stalled again, as hospital management refused to address their central concern: assignment limits of four patients to every nurse on medical-surgical floors. ....
