Wantage MP David Johnston: We need to be able to raise an army


SINCE 1688, the consent of parliament has been required for the raising and keeping of a standing army.
In modern times, this means that every five years parliament is asked to give consent to an Armed Forces Bill, which came before us last week and, without which, there is no means to ensure service personnel obey orders.
I’ve taken a keen interest in our treatment of servicemen and women as my dad served in the British Army for 18 years, seeing armed conflict in places around the world. And, of course, we have a strong tradition of admiration and service for our armed forces within the Wantage and Didcot constituency. That tradition of service includes some of my predecessors: when the seat was Abingdon, it was of course represented by Airey Neave, who had a proud record of service in World War Two. His predecessor was Ralph Glyn, who served in World War One and was awarded a military cross. ....

New legislation to help ensure fair treatment for armed forces
New legislation to help ensure armed forces personnel, veterans and their families are not disadvantaged by their service when accessing key public services.

26 January 2021
the Armed Forces Bill will enshrine the Armed Forces Covenant in law and help prevent service personnel and veterans being disadvantaged when accessing services like healthcare, education and housing
the Bill will improve the Service Justice System for our personnel wherever they are operating.

New military police watchdog will enable families to complain about handling of cases
The new Service Police Complaints Commissioner will mirror the arrangements used in the civilian justice system

The military is to get its own police watchdog, the veterans minister has announced, in a  move that will enable families to complain about the handling of cases.
The Armed Forces Bill, due to be presented to Parliament shortly, will implement the recommendations of the recent Service Justice System review to allow complaints about service policing, including by families, to be handled independently. ....
