A study examining years of contracts awarded by Jersey City found that the majority of city vendors had no recorded demographic data, and of those who did, minority-owned businesses were significantly under-represented in the city’s purchasing history.
City officials said that Jersey City’s spending with diverse vendors is likely better than the study makes it out to be, and that the city has made large improvements in its spending practices.
But the study revealed that demographic data is missing for 69% of Jersey City spending from 2013 to 2018 and the data that is available shows that businesses owned by people of color, women, LGBTQ people, and veterans win disproportionately few city contracts. ....

Jovina Johnson becomes president of the Journal Square Community Association
The Journal Square Community Association elected Jovina Johnson as its new president.
She replaces Kevin Bing, who stepped down after leading the association for the past two years.
Johnson, a human resources professional, was first elected to the group’s board of trustees in February 2020.
Johnson said her priorities will include increasing the group’s diversity to more accurately reflect the population in Journal Square and the city overall, expanding the JSQCA’s relationships with local business, and overseeing a return to in-person meetings and events.
Bing, who was first elected to the Journal Square group’s board in 2017 and who was re-elected to the board this month, called his service as JSQCA president “the highlight” of his civic career. By stepping down after two years as president, Bing noted that he was following the precedent set by Bi ....
