In a new partnership with Coinbase, Sotheby s will now be able to accept Bitcoin and Ethereum during auctions.
During an interview with CNBC s Squawk Box, Sotheby s CEO, Charles F. Stewart announced that the auction house will begin accepting Bitcoin and Ethereum after a partnership with Coinbase (COIN). 
We are really excited to make this happen. It s something we have been thinking about for quite some time, said Stewart. 
Stewart said that it will be up to the artists what form of currency they would like to accept.  ....

Next month, on May 22 to be precise, watch collectors from across the globe will enter into an epic battle for that most prized-possession—a rare Patek Philippe watch. At the Important Watches auction in Hong Kong, which is being dubbed as the Auction of the Decade, Christie’s is presenting a prototype example of a Patek Philippe ref. 3448J perpetual calendar 18k gold wristwatch that belonged to Alan Banbery, the previous curator of the Patek Philippe Museum and also the author of the Patek Philippe book. The watch, which comes endowed with immense history (it was gifted by Patek Philippe owners, Henri and Philippe Stern, in 1975 to Banbery) is estimated to cost a jaw-dropping $3.2 million to $5 million. ....

African collectors are snapping up African contemporary art — Quartz Africa

Sotheby’s recently concluded its bi-annual Modern & Contemporary African Art auction, exceeding the lower end of its pre-sale estimate by over 40% to net £2.7 million ($3.7 million). Participants hailed from 34 countries, with over a third of buyers transacting with Sotheby’s for the first time, making the auction houses’ third online-only auction of contemporary African art a major success.
The category was created by Sotheby’s only four years ago to champion the work of African artists. Since then, it has achieved over 80 record-breaking sales, underscoring the rising global interest in this category. According to Sotheby’s estimates, on average around a third of bidders since the launch have originated from Africa, North America, and Europe, with 10% from LatAm and Asia. Yet around 70% of the sales between this period were African collectors. ....
