Kenya withdraws from ICJ maritime border case with Somalia

Kenya has pulled out of the maritime border case with Somalia just a few hours to the scheduled hearing at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Netherlands.
On March 9, the ICJ, a principal judicial organ of the United Nations, stated it would hold public hearings in the case concerning Maritime Delimitation in the Indian Ocean from tomorrow to March 24.
Kenya is expected to file a notice of non-participation in the hearings, sources say.
The Kenyan legal team may tomorrow seek 30 minutes to explain grounds upon which the country may seek not to participate in the hearings. ....

Kenya vows to defend disputed maritime border with Somalia

The Foreign Affairs Ministry will today issue a statement on Kenya’s stand on the maritime dispute with Somalia that is before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
A senior government official yesterday told
The Standard that the ministry will be expressing displeasure with how the court is handling the case.
Kenya’s latest stand that it will not participate in the hearing today came after a week-long meeting held between government agencies and lawyers and the biggest concern was ICJ’s decision to hear the case despite protests on the impartiality of judges and the effects of Covid-19 on preparation of the case. ....

A former judge of an international tribunal and a law lecturer in the UK are part of a team of eight hired to defend Kenya in a maritime dispute filed by Somalia.
Prof Sean Murphy of George Washington School of Law will be leading the team alongside Justice Tullion Treves, a a former judge at the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea. Justice Treves also appeared before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in a similar case pitting Peru versus Chile. ....
