Solana Beach nonprofit La Colonia de Eden Gardens held its fourth drive-through student art exhibit May 2 in the St. Leo’s parking lot, providing a socially-distanced event through its La Clase Mágica program.
The theme was “Honoring Mother Nature,” giving students a chance to express the things they admire most about the planet. Each work of art hung along a square-shaped display that viewers could drive around upon pulling into the parking lot.
“I can see each time more care being put into the work,” said Susanna Romero-Reis, the nonprofit’s programming director “They’re becoming very proud of their work and you can see how much time and thought they’re putting into it.” ....

UC San Diego Health was named the 2021 “Partner in Educational Excellence” by the Association of California School Administrators Region 18 for its COVID-19 testing programs.
Superintendents from the Solana Beach, Del Mar Union, Rancho Santa Fe and San Dieguito Union school districts joined together to nominate the academic medical center for the award in honor of the groundbreaking partnerships it helped create in San Diego County during the pandemic. The San Dieguito Union High School District is facing questions about how it is handling public comment, including its recent decision to no longer accept written public comments and an incident when several speakers were cut off mid-comment during a special board meeting.
On Feb. 25, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of San Diego and Imperial Counties wrote a letter to the board and superintendent with concerns that they are unlawfully restricting public comment.
“We write to remind you that a school board may not silence community members engaged in lawful public comment simply because the board dislikes their message,” wrote Melissa Deleon, an equity staff attorney with the ACLU. “If the board is limiting access to public meetings and restricting comments based on the viewpoint expressed, it is viola ....

A San Diego-based law firm known for representing public entities has come under increased scrutiny for its legal work in various local school districts.
The law firm of Stutz, Artiano, Shinoff & Holtz has represented most of San Diego’s 42 school districts over the past 15 years. Its most visible lawyer, Daniel Shinoff, has played a role in many high profile school district cases throughout the county.
Earlier this year, the firm was sued for malpractice by the San Ysidro School District for allegedly failing to inform that school board of potential settlement offers during a case and for breach of its fiduciary duty to the district. The law firm settled the case for $2 million at the first mediation between the parties, before any depositions were taken or binding arbitration sessions started. The District received a net payout of over $1.8 million after paying outside legal fees. ....
