Ragan: Update on local road projects
The Oak Ridger
Tennessee Rep. John Ragan, R-Oak Ridge, on Thursday provided an update on several highway projects managed by the Tennessee Department of Transportation in Anderson County. More than a dozen construction projects totaling more than $32 million are moving forward, which are expected to improve safety and support economic growth.
“I’m glad to see we’re making progress on these critical projects that will help improve traffic and road safety for residents of Anderson County,” Ragan said in a news release. “I appreciate the work of our local officials and am grateful for TDOT’s commitment in moving these projects forward.” ....

Non-profit groups that run homeless shelters say they’re facing the worst cash crunch in several years due to significant delays in payments from New York City.
During the pandemic, the de Blasio administration vastly expanded the shelter options it offered as it sought to protect homeless people from the coronavirus. But these efforts have resulted in so many new contracts and changes to existing ones that the city is having a hard time keeping up. And even when contracts are fully registered, homeless shelter providers say the city is failing to pay their invoices on time. ....

The New York Times’ bombshell report about one of the city’s biggest homeless shelter providers points to its inability to hold shelter operators accountable for their troubling behavior.

On Sunday, The New York Times published a damning investigation into Bronx Parent Housing Network’s chief executive Victor Rivera, who has been accused of sexual and financial abuse while running one of New York City’s biggest nonprofit homeless shelter systems. The report draws attention to a troubling pattern among nonprofits contracted by the city to provide shelter services: despite persistent complaints, the city is often reluctant to cancel contracts due to a need fo ....

In addition to healthcare workers, people over 65, police, firefighters, and teachers, another critical population became eligible last week for coronavirus vaccines: Homeless people at high risk for infection.
New York State issued guidelines that said, starting last Monday, those who live in shelters “where sleeping, bathing or eating accommodations must be shared with individuals and families who are not part of the same household,” plus the staffers who work in these places, could get vaccinated.
That description includes shelters for single adults, where eight to 12 people on average share a room, as well as the hotels where many homeless individuals have been moved in recent months, according to service providers who’ve been briefed by the city’s Department of Homeless Services. Families with children who reside i ....
