Emory joins national Mellon Foundation research project to address racial reparations


Emory University will be part of a $5 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded to the University of Michigan’s Center for Social Solutions and multiple higher education partners as part of the Foundation’s Just Futures initiative.
The project, which will span three years, creates and leverages a national network of college and university-based humanities scholars working in partnerships with community-based organizations to develop research-informed reparation plans for each location.
Emory will be among the network of nine​ ​geographically dispersed and organizationally different colleges and universities that will involve community fellows as well as local organizations in a collaborative public history reckoning designed to offer tangible suggestions for community-based racial reparations solutions. ....

ANN ARBOR – The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s Just Futures Initiative has awarded the University of Michigan two $5 million grants.
Led by professors Stephanie Fryberg and Earl Lewis, the grant money will be used over the next three years to fund projects that address racial inequity.
Fryberg is a professor of psychology and a University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor. Lewis is the Thomas C. Holt Distinguished University Professor of History, Afroamerican and African Studies and Public Policy. He is also the director of the Center for Social Solutions. ....

Mellon Foundation grants $72 million to humanities projects focused on issues of racial justice

Kali-Ahset Amen, of Johns Hopkins University, said efforts like this West Baltimore community mural a Black heritage/neighborhood beautification project done in collaboration with African American churches will be enhanced with Mellon funding.
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation on Wednesday announced about $72 million in total grants for 16 different humanities-based projects focused on issues of racial justice.
The “Just Futures” grants of up to $5 million each will “support multidisciplinary and multi-institutional collaborative teams producing solutions-based work that contributes to public understanding of the nation’s racist past and can lead to the creation of socially just futures,” according to the foundation. ....
