Some nurses in Japan are incensed at a request from Tokyo Olympics organisers to have 500 of them dispatched to help out with the games.
They say they are already near the breaking point dealing with the coronavirus pandemic.
Olympic officials have said they will need 10,000 medical workers to staff the games, and the request for more nurses comes amid a new spike in the virus with Tokyo and Osaka under a state of emergency. ....

Olympics Nurses furious after being asked to lend a hand at Games


AN ONGOING debate as to where nurses are best placed when the Olympics start in July has left some incensed, after Tokyo Olympic organisers requested to have 500 of them dispatched to help out with the games. 
In a statement from the Japan Federation of Medical Workers’ Unions, secretary general Susumu Morita said the focus should be on the pandemic, not the Olympics.
“We must definitely stop the proposal to send as Olympic volunteers those nurses, tasked with protecting the fight against the serious coronavirus pandemic,” Morita said.
“I am extremely infuriated by the insistence of pursuing the Olympics despite the risk to patients’ and nurses’ health and lives.” ....

Nurses in Japan are pushing back against a request by Olympic organizers to help with medical care during the upcoming summer Games in Tokyo, The Associated Press reported
The nurses are reportedly upset about the request for 500 nurses to help, saying they’re already near the breaking point dealing with the coronavirus pandemic.
“Beyond feeling anger, I was stunned at the insensitivity,” Mikito Ikeda, a nurse in Nagoya in central Japan, told the AP. “It shows how human life is being taken lightly.”

The secretary general of the Japan Federation of Medical Workers’ Unions, Susumu Morita, also released a statement saying that the focus should be on the pandemic, not the Olympics.  ....

Tokyo, May 3 (EFE).- Japanese healthcare workers have spurned plans to deploy 10,000 of the already overworked personnel during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics just as a fourth wave of Covid-19 infections has pushed the number severe cases to a new record.
Organizers were planning to designate around 10,000 healthcare workers at the Olympic village and competitions’ venues to carry out the mandatory daily tests and treat possible coronavirus cases among the participants.
Last week, organizers ask the Japanese Nursing Association for 500 professionals to “voluntarily” work at the Olympics, which proved to be the last straw.
Healthcare unions and professionals took to social media to denounce that “nurses are not disposable pieces” and that “we, nurses, are desperate to protect our patients,” messages that were shared by thousands of users. ....
