Srinagar: In a major embarrassment to the administration of Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory, the newly-elected members of district development councils (DDCs) in the Union Territory on Tuesday, March 9, staged protests against what they said was a “humiliating and insulting” protocol announced for them.
The representatives, elected from the grassroots, also boycotted en masse a government programme. This comes at a time when the administration is eager to showcase the representatives to the world as an example of democracy achieved by the Central government after reading down Article 370 and withdrawing the erstwhile J&K’s special status. ....

Srinagar: The People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD), a conglomerate of political parties seeking the restoration of Article 370, will control only eight district development councils (DDCs) in Jammu and Kashmir, despite the numbers favouring it in 12 districts.
However, the fact that the alliance managed to surpass the BJP’s tally is being seen as a victory against all odds. Some DDC members elected on the PAGD’s ticket were poached by rival parties and the UT administration also changed rules governing the elections, apparently to favour the BJP and its friendly parties. ....

J&K DDC polls: 8.93% voting in first two hours of eighth and final phase

In all districts of the Jammu division, voting averages remained above 60 per cent with Poonch noting the highest 83.5 per cent.

Around 10 people were injured in clashes between supporters of rival candidates at several places in Poonch district’s volatile Mendhar tehsil on Saturday as the eight-phase J&K District Development Council elections concluded there on a violent note, sources said.
In the final phase, the UT recorded nearly 51 per cent voting, with three districts in the Valley recording under 10 per cent voting. In all districts of the Jammu division, voting averages remained above 60 per cent with Poonch noting the highest 83.5 per cent. The highest voting average recorded for the 10 districts of the Valley was 40.6 per cent which ....
