There are times when I think that I have told a story fully and that there is nothing else to talk about it when some most unexpected developments nudge me to go on and tell some more! This is the situation that I am now in because of the overwhelming feedback that I have been receiving in response to my last article about the bank robbery in Mysuru, sixteen years ago.
The first person to call me was KBG himself which is not one bit surprising, because being the man at the top of the editorial ladder, he is the third person after me, to read the final draft of any article that I write. Now if you are wondering who the second person in this hierarchy is, it is my wife as she goes over all my weekly writings with a fine-toothed comb!

COVID: Lives more precious than losing an academic year or two

Sir,
I fully agree with the views expressed by Dr. Javeed Nayeem in his article Time For A Little More Patience! (SOM dated Dec. 27). The existing COVID-19 is still active in the country and has no signs of abating. Further, different strains as pointed out from the UK are spreading very fast. This strain is claimed to be more virulent and devastating when compared to COVID-19.
Presently, the vaccines are at the final stages of experimentation and are yet to be approved by ICMR. It is not known how effective these vaccines will be on different individuals.
The State Government is contemplating on re-opening schools from Jan. 1. Risk factors are quite high. I, therefore, reiterate that the schools should not be re-opened under any circumstances in the interest of safeguarding children’s health and the safety of the seniors at home since both belong to the vulnerable group. Online coaching, as it stands now, seem to be working well and that needs to be intensified and conducted more meaningfully. Lives, after all, are more precious than losing an academic year or two.

Why was Uttanahalli Road named after H.R. Venkatasubba Rao?

Sir,
It was fascinating to go through Gouri Satya’s write-up in SOM dated Dec. 20 on ‘De Havilland Arch, an Engineering Marvel’ in continuation of Dr. Javeed Nayeem’s article. Of course, needless to say both of them have been a source of great information to old-time SOM readers like me.
In the article there is a reference to the stairway to Chamundi Hill from Uttanahalli side. This stirred my curiosity on Chamundi Hill Road as the stretch leading to Uttanahalli is named after my maternal grandfather H.R. Venkatasubba Rao (see picture above).
I know practically nothing about him except what my father mentioned about him. He died around the time I was born in January 1932.
