Science and life’s inviolability
Chris Barbara, from Doctors for Choice (May 6), attacks the claim that a fertilised embryo is a human person, saying this cannot be scientifically proved. He even states the opposite: “It would be more helpful to consider embryos for what they are: a precursor to a human person.”
Is it a ‘scientific fact’ that they are not a human person, such that one should feel no qualms about aborting them?
While it is an obvious (‘scientific’?) fact that embryos normally grow to behave as persons, there is no obvious ‘scientific’ marker of the point when personhood sets in. Personhood remains mysterious to ‘science’ but, in law and ethics, we give it great weight. For Barbara, too, the taking of personal life seems to be a red line. ....

Christ’s words are immutable
Christianity can be distinguished from other world religions by the uniqueness of its belief that God became man, lived among us, died, was buried and rose from the dead after three days. Christ is the only personage in history who dares speak of Himself in the present tense – “Before Abraham ever was, I am.”
On the other hand, one wonders how our secularised world would look upon Jesus as a human personality devoid of His divinity. A matter which would surely cause derision or perhaps even suspicion is the fact that He led a celibate life. ....

Taking a stand
I refer to the letter ‘Catholics step forward’. Although it’s certainly a pleasure reading Jacqueline Calleja’s defence and promotion of our Catholic faith, Mgr Joseph Farrugia forgot to mention a handful of other correspondents with a Catholic inspiration who gave their contribution to this cause.
This defence of the Catholic morality and the Church itself was never found wanting even prior to the enactment of certain debatable laws in the not-too-distant past but when you have MPs who are dead set to follow the ruling party’s policy, even against their conscience, the damage cannot be stalled. ....

Catholics step forward
I would like to thank Jacqueline Calleja for sharing with us, readers of this paper, her Catholic faith. In her writing, she is modest, earnest and stimulating.
The responses that she gets, even if in dissent, are evidence that what she writes is thought-provoking. She is filling a gap that other faithful Catholics could also help fill.
I know that in Malta and Gozo we have such Catholics, often intellectually trained and profoundly spiritual but where are they?
Jesus needs us.
The coin
Coins can mirror real-life experiences. Photo: Shutterstock.com
The coin is perhaps the most common item around the world. But this small item has far greater significance than its value. A coin consists of the obverse and the reverse. These two parts never meet each other, they are always on opposite sides. Thus, a coin can be a good example of real-life experiences. The best example is in the political field as many countries have two major par ....

Fidelity to the Gospel
Koheleth, the biblical preacher, thus sings: “Is there a thing of which it is said ‘See, this is new?’ It has already been in the ages before us.”
These words, written a few hundred years before Christ, ring true today as they have always done. Yet, so often, we,  men and women of the third millennium, pride or, rather, illude ourselves that much that is happening in our age is entirely and breathtakingly new. Naturally, where science and technology are concerned our times have witnessed unparallelled achievements compared to past ages.
However, when it comes to certain norms which are presented as being entirely innovative, this is unfounded. ....
