Taking a stand
I refer to the letter ‘Catholics step forward’. Although it’s certainly a pleasure reading Jacqueline Calleja’s defence and promotion of our Catholic faith, Mgr Joseph Farrugia forgot to mention a handful of other correspondents with a Catholic inspiration who gave their contribution to this cause.
This defence of the Catholic morality and the Church itself was never found wanting even prior to the enactment of certain debatable laws in the not-too-distant past but when you have MPs who are dead set to follow the ruling party’s policy, even against their conscience, the damage cannot be stalled. ....

Emotional reaction
Moral convictions have this intuitive power that makes them feel as if they must be true. This explains why/how anti-choice people like John Azzopardi (February 18) perceive the immorality of abortion to be a fact when, actually, it is a matter of their subjective state of mind and what they attach moral significance to.
For the record, the evidence that 19 out of every 20 women do not regret having abortions is found in the study of Rocca et al (Emotions and decision rightness over five years following an abortion: an examination of decision difficulty and abortion stigma) published in Social Science & Medicine, Volume 248, March 2020, 11270 (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0277953619306999). ....

Post-abortion regret
I was stupefied by Isabel Stabile’s statement that 19 out of 20 women do not regret having an abortion. It would be interesting to know the source of this information. For me, it is an outright Quixotic lie.
The professor and her group are trying to colour their movement as being Christian, compassionate and ethical but, obviously,  they don’t represent what decency and morals dictate. Their clever ideological ploy is an attempt to wrap themselves around common personal rectitude.
I can assure her that, out of the quotations vauntingly cited by them, the most overpowering poignant reflection goes something like this: “killing my baby in my womb may have lasted only a few minutes but I will carry my remorse to the grave.” ....

Shift employees and public holidays
I refer to the article ‘Shift employees in the dark over leave entitlement’ (February 7). Surprisingly, the article seemed to have disregarded a rebuttal to a very similar article that featured two days prior in other media outlets.
In accordance with the 2017 electoral manifesto, the government is making true its pledge to reinstate public holidays falling on weekends in accordance with the procedure which was in effect prior to 2005. Therefore, necessary legal amendments are underway this year to fully implement this measure.
Employment law bestows on workers the right for entitlements in relation to public holidays. So as to calculate the entitlements in relation to public holidays, one must make a distinction between the rate of pay applicable when one works on a public holiday and the compensation given for public holidays that actually are not enjoyed by workers. ....
