Bangor, Maine will take new steps to address climate change

BANGOR, Maine The city of Bangor will begin taking new steps to address climate change. That decision comes after months of encouragement by young, local activists calling on their city councilors to make a difference.
On Monday, Feb. 22, the Bangor City Council voted unanimously to pass a climate emergency resolution Recognizing a Climate Emergency and Committing to a Municipal Climate Action Planning Process Consistent with the Maine Climate Action Plan, Maine Won t Wait . The resolve recognizes the planet is experiencing a climate emergency , so the City of Bangor will take necessary steps to mitigate and eliminate municipal impacts on climate change . ....

Arlene Rita Keithley, 90, passed away Friday, February 12, 2021, with her children by her side at the Fauquier Health Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Warrenton.
She was born December 6, 1930, in Old Town, Maine, to the late Forrest Linwood Avery a Pharmacist and Annie (DeRoche) Avery.
A 1949 graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School, she briefly attended nursing school in Portland. But when her beloved father fell ill, she returned home to maintain operation of his business, the Avery Pharmacy in Yarmouth. While attending a dance in Portland, she met her future husband who was stationed at the Brunswick Naval Airbase and on May 13, 1955, she married Donald D. Keithley in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. ....

Vote For Bangor Area Non-Profits to Receive $5000
This will be the fifth year that $5000 will be voted on by the people to give one Bangor Area Non-Profit a boost to start the year.
At an annual meeting held by the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce, Machias Savings Bank will be investing $5000 to the Bangor Area Non-Profit that garners the most votes to receive the hefty gift.  The announcement will be ZOOMed and be streamed live on Facebook at 3 PM on Thursday, January 28th during the meeting.
Right now you can vote in the first round of voting, which goes through this Friday, January 15th at 5 PM.  This will narrow the list down to 20 non-profits for the second round of voting which will go from Tuesdsay, January 19th to Tuesday, January 26th at 5 PM ....

SOUTH CHINA The coronavirus pandemic continues to run rampant across the state, but a handful of local schools are participating in an increased testing effort to help stop the spread.
The Abbott rapid antigen COVID-19 tests are made for individuals exhibiting at least one of the most common COVID-19 symptoms or two of the less common symptoms. The testing process involves self-swabbing the lower portion of one’s nostrils and is processed on site by adding six drops of a liquid reagent to the swab on a test card. The tests are free of cost to students and staff. ....

Dozens of Maine schools now using COVID rapid tests for students and staff
The Maine CDC has distributed more than 4,000 rapid tests to K-12 schools since early November.

William H. Rowe School nurse Jill Webber in her office in Yarmouth on Friday. The Yarmouth schools have received 160 rapid tests. Webber said the rapid tests help the schools immensely, and wishes she had more. “The efficiency and speed at which we can do the testing is going to reduce transmission in schools and the community,” she said.

Nearly 50 Maine schools and school districts are now using rapid-result coronavirus tests on symptomatic students and staff to quickly identify positive cases and to improve the contact tracing and quarantine process. ....
