A parolee who shot a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputy in December was sentenced to a maximum of 61 years in prison Monday.
Nicholas Berreman, 23, of California shot DCSO Sgt. John Lenz during a traffic stop about 15 miles south of Carson City.
In late February, Berreman pleaded guilty to attempted murder, to being a prohibited person in possession of a gun and battery with a deadly weapon causing substantial bodily harm.
Lenz provided a victim impact statement in court Monday and detailed some of his injuries: a bullet entering his left cheek, breaking off a molar, breaking bone fragments from his jaw and lodging into his C2 vertebrae, temporarily causing Lentz to lose feeling in his hand. Lenz s jaw was wired shut for six weeks after the shooting. He added that he had surgery a couple weeks ago to remove additional bone fragments but many more are still lodged in his body.
