Lenz said bullet fragments from the shooting remain lodged in his spine and may affect his long-term health. He said he was testifying for all of Berreman’s victims, both past and future. “I love my life and I’ve worked hard to make it a life worth living,” Lenz said. “He tried to take my experiences and my future from me and turn them to ash.”

In late February, Berreman pleaded guilty to attempted murder, to being a prohibited person in possession of a gun and battery with a deadly weapon causing substantial bodily harm. Lenz provided a victim impact statement in court Monday and detailed some of his injuries: a bullet entering his left cheek, breaking off a molar, breaking bone fragments from his jaw and lodging into his C2 vertebrae, temporarily causing Lentz to lose feeling in his hand. Lenz s jaw was wired shut for six weeks after the shooting. He added that he had surgery a couple weeks ago to remove additional bone fragments but many more are still lodged in his body.

(AP) A judge has sentenced a man to up to 61 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to shooting a Nevada deputy multiple times during a traffic stop in December. Nicholas Berreman, 23, of California, pleaded guilty in February to multiple charges including attempted murder of a first responder, prohibited person in possession of a gun and battery with a deadly weapon causing substantial bodily harm. He was also fined $15,000 on Monday. Police said multiple Douglas County deputies stopped a vehicle being driven by Kaela Mae Horse-Berreman, 31, on Dec. 20 around 11:15 p.m. Deputies recognized Berreman as the passenger, who at the time was wanted by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for violating his parole.
