July 21, 1887: The Comet carried several interesting news accounts of various activities in Johnson City. “The new wash room at the Piedmont House is a model of neatness and is a marked improvement. Two new marble basins have been received and the water is supplied by the water works, it looks real citified.” “The game of base ball (sic) between the Esters’ and the Highlanders last Saturday resulted in a victory for the home team by a score of 30 to 34. The game was played in four hours and thirty minutes.” “The register at the Piedmont House shows that 618 persons have been accommodated at that hotel in the first 18 days of July. This list does not include about 50 that took supper there Saturday night and did not register. This is a remarkable showing and serves to show that a larger number of people pass through Johnson City than even the citizens have any idea of. July 6, 1892: Readers of The Comet learned about several items of local interest. “A little child of David and Harriet Baker died the latter part of last week aged 15 months. “Geo C. Reece laid the first brick of the new building, which is to replace the one burned and deposited beneath it in Italian detail 1767, and one of our pennies dated 1892, and by her act declared that Phoenix-like the old building should rise from its ashes.”

June 28, 1843: The Jonesborough Whig and Independent Journal reported, “As to the crowd in attendance here, on Monday, it is variously estimated – at from two to four thousand. Of one thing we are certain, to wit, that we never have seen as large a concourse of people in the town of Jonesborough. And the orators themselves, declared the assembly to be the largest they had addressed during the campaign. Reading other articles in that issue of the newspaper, it is likely that the orators referred to were James Jones, who was the Governor of Tennessee during that time, and James Polk, who was Governor of Tennessee from 1839-1841. Polk later became President of the United States.

June 5, 1868: Reporting on a recent marriage, the East Tennessee Union Flag shared, “On Thursday, the 28th of May, at the residence of the bride’s mother, near this place, by Rev. John Rubush, Mr. H.C. Grimm, of Greene county (sic), to Miss Harriet Millard, of this County.” The East Tennessee Union Flag was a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way on the masthead. June 5, 1890: The Comet opined words that we would be wise to remember and practice more than 130 years later. “It is always well to remember that in saying things against any religion you are not only guilty of bad taste, but you do not know whose feelings you may hurt.”
