Today In Johnson City History: July 11


July 11, 1872: The Herald and Tribune reported, “On last Thursday, the new Hotel at Johnson City, was struck by lightning. Several persons were severely shocked, but no one seriously injured. The lightning struck several other points in the city and vicinity.”
The Herald and Tribune was, and still is, is a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way on the masthead of the paper in 1872. Inside the pages of the paper, readers could also see the town spelled as Jonesboro’.
July 11, 1906: The Chattanooga Daily Times, with a dateline from Johnson City, reported on a new industry.
“A charter for the Watauga Knitting Mills has been secured with L. Whitney Wood, Frank Taylor, L.P. Wood, T.A. Cox and E.J. Vaught as charter members.” ....

July 10, 1902: The Comet reported several items of interest to Johnson Citians.
“If Express Agent Moser happens to be a little absent-minded for a day or two it must be overlooked. It’s a girl, and arrived on the morning of the Fourth.”
“The Watauga Lighting and Power Co. is overhauling its street lines and preparing to furnish lights for all residents. Let them figure with you on the cost of wiring and lighting.”
“H.L. Bruner has returned from a stay of three weeks in Hot Springs, Ark., much improved in health and ready as ever to see that the wants of his customers are promptly supplied.” ....

July 8, 1886: The Comet carried a variety of news items of local interest. Among them were: “A young lady in the city while out walking the other evening was attacked by a Willie Goat and took refuge on a fence where she remained until Willie took her off.”
“A large stationary engine and sawmill is being transferred to the Narrow Gauge road (sic) from the Pennsylvania Lumber Co. They have bought a large tract of land and are erecting a saw mill and factory near White Rock, Tenn.
“Mrs. R.C. Hunter, W. A. Jones, John A. Russell and Messrs. Chas. Fine and Will Helton, were babtized (sic) last Sunday morning by Rev. E. Allison in Brush Creek, just about town.” ....
