Kemp says Georgia will keep paying for nurses in pandem...

ATLANTA (AP) Gov. Brian Kemp says the state of Georgia will keep paying for extra nurses to assist hospitals, nursing homes and other health care facilities that have struggled to find staff and keep up with demand because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Republican governor made the announcement Thursday during a news conference at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta where Public Health Commissioner Kathleen Toomey and an intensive care unit nurse received a coronavirus vaccine in an attempt to demonstrate that it s safe and effective.
Kemp said Georgia will commit as much as $70 million to pay staffing agencies that are providing extra nurses through March. Georgia is on track to spend $250 million on the program this year. The state has spent federal coronavirus aid on the program so far. Kemp said he hopes the federal government will free up more money to cover the costs, but spokesman Cody Hall said Georgia would use state money if no federal money is available. ....

ATLANTA (AP) A record number of people were in hospitals Wednesday in Georgia with confirmed COVID-19 infections, another signal that infections are now more widespread than at the previous summer peak, as public health authorities sought to raise the alarm that the coronavirus is spreading unabated across the state.
In Atlanta, a group called COVID Survivors for Change set out 1,000 chairs near the state capitol in a cold rain to remember the people who have died in Georgia from the respiratory illness. That number rose Wednesday to 10,228 confirmed and suspected deaths. ....

CONYERS, Ga. - The first metro Atlanta COVID-19 hospital vaccinations took place Thursday, as the number of infections becomes more widespread across Georgia.
Since our fight with COVID-19 really began incredibly over 9 months ago.the people of Georgia have certainly felt the effect of a once in a century global pandemic, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said during a press conference Thursday afternoon at Grady Memorial Hospital.
One hundred healthcare workers at Piedmont Rockdale Hospital in Conyers were first vaccinated at a local hospital. Other local hospitals, such as Grady, started to get their vaccine shipments Thursday. The governor said this is a major step in fighting the virus and fully restoring the state s economy., ....
