ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Dougherty County Commissioners just passed an ordinance to make the county a âbroadband ready community.â Widespread access to high-speed internet impacts the whole county and it increases access to healthcare and education.
Some people without high-speed internet faced issues when the pandemic hit.
Phoebe Putney Health System had to ramp up its use of telehealth at the beginning of the pandemic.
Dougherty County School System faced connection issues early on when in-person learning switched to virtual.
County Administrator Michael McCoy told WALB News 10 that high-speed internet access is growing in importance. ....

Wide swaths of South Georgia lack access to high-speed internet service.
But where are the most households lacking broadband access in the state? Fulton County.
Thanks to a groundbreaking map the first of its kind in the United States community leaders and telecommunications companies in Georgia can now easily identify broadband dead zones down to a single address and expand access to those areas.
“Approximately 10 percent of the population of Georgia is not served,” said Eric McRae, associate director of information technology outreach services at the University of Georgia’s Institute of Government, who oversaw the map’s creation. “That’s not too bad, or doesn’t seem like it is. But when you actually start thinking about it, that’s a million people that don’t have service.” ....

Dawson BOC to hear presentations on broadband and alcohol ordinances
At the Dawson County Board of Commissioners work session on Thursday, commissioners are scheduled to hear presentations on several ordinances and policies, including an update to the county’s alcohol ordinance and a program that would certify Dawson County as a “Broadband Ready Community.”
According to an agenda for the work session, which will begin at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 4, commissioners will first hear from Dawson County Public Works Director David McKee on the proposed “Broadband Ready Community Ordinance.”
This ordinance is part of a 2018 program started by the Georgia Broadband Deployment Initiative (GBDI), meant to assist the deployment of broadband throughout Georgia. ....
