People with cystic fibrosis are living better and longer, and now investigators want to further enhance quality and longevity by better understanding the role of nutrition, body composition and exercise in their health across an increasing lifespan.
While CF may be viewed primarily as a lung disease, the abnormally thick mucus that clogs patients airways also obstructs other fundamentals like digesting food and absorbing nutrients, producing sufficient insulin, sleeping and exercising, says Dr. Ryan A. Harris, clinical exercise and vascular physiologist at the Georgia Prevention Institute at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University. ....

Heart rate decline predicts the risk of future cardiovascular diseases, as per the researchers of the Medical College of Georgia who report a link between a faster decrease in resting heart rate from childhood to adulthood and a larger left ventricle over a 21-year period in hundreds of individuals who were healthy at the start.
The faster decrease in heart rate also was associated with a higher level of pressure inside the blood vessels of the body, which the heart has to pump against to get blood and oxygen out, they write in the journal Acta Cardiologica. The associations were generally stronger in Blacks. ....

NIH training grant enhances opportunities for biomedical graduate students at AU

Credit: Kim Ratliff, Augusta University
Augusta University has received a $1.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to help support the graduate education of future scientists whose focus is cardiometabolic diseases like hypertension and diabetes which disproportionally affect minorities.
The training grant (1HL155011-01A1) will support four graduate students in its first year, and scale up to six students per year by year four of the five-year grant. It will offer aspiring PhDs and MD/PhDs the opportunity to learn from 43 federally funded scientists focusing on different aspects of cardometabolic disease related to minority health. Student recruitment has just started. ....
