Stroudsburg reflects on year after killing of George Floyd

The vigil opened with a prayer.
Lord, we thank you for bringing us to a place of unity, said Bishop Kenneth Pearman. A crowd of about 60 people stood around him as the sun set over Courthouse Square. To recover from the things that seem to be stolen.
The prayer ended, and a megaphone was handed off between community members and leaders. They stepped forward one by one to testify against police brutality and demand reform. A few wore shirts that read Black Lives Matter, and I can t breathe.
All asked for the same thing: Unity.
Tuesday s vigil marked one year since the murder of George Floyd at the hands of a white former Minneapolis police officer. His death was incendiary, caught on camera and shared a hundredfold, igniting months of demonstrations and calls for reform across the nation. ....

The George Floyd murder sent the message around the world, Black Lives Matter. 
It was hard to look at the video so many times, to see and hear him asking for help, and those that sworn to protect and serve, now was serving a death sentence, for a $20 counterfeit bill. 
Justice for one cannot be justice for all. Acknowledging that our system is broken, racial profiling, and the stereotype mindset is what needs to change, for it is only a small piece of what this nation needs to see take place. 
If we look at the word Humanity, we will find that every walk of life on this earth, is a human being. ....

Stroudsburg vigil for George Floyd to be held Tuesday night
Tuesday marks one year since the murder of George Floyd, a Black man who died after a white former police officer knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes. The year that followed saw demonstrations against police brutality and calls for comprehensive reform.
The Monroe County branch of the NAACP is hosting the vigil at 7 p.m. in Courthouse Square in Stroudsburg to honor his memory. The event is free and open to the public.
George Floyd’s family is calling for a Day of Enlightenment, the NAACP wrote on Facebook. We will respect their wishes and ask our community to come forward and share their thoughts and feelings and commit to moving forward in the direction of change. ....

Video of Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck for about nine minutes went viral last May and inspired months of demonstrations against police brutality. Amid calls for expansive police reform, two local chiefs of police said they stand behind Tuesday s verdict and are hopeful for the future of law enforcement.
William Parrish, chief of police for East Stroudsburg University, said he was deeply disturbed when he watched the video of Floyd s arrest and death. He said he struggled to make sense of Chauvin s actions and couldn t.
Yet as I watched the trial coverage of Derek Chauvin, I felt some of my lost pride restored, Parrish said. ....

Activists plan protest over Christian Hall's death after police shooting

Questions about the shooting of Christian Hall by the Pennsylvania State Police have not gone away since the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office ruled the use of force justified.
For activist Treandous T.C Cuthbertson, these questions demand answers: Who gave the order to shoot? When did Hall become a threat to the officers? Why did the statement from the Pennsylvania State Police say that Hall pointed his gun at them “when the video evidence disproves that”?
Hall was carrying what turned out to be a realistic-looking pellet gun when he was shot on a highway overpass on Dec. 30, 2020. His hands were raised when he was shot, and as far as the available video shows, the gun was pointed up and away from police. ....
