GSA seeking a tuition increase from towns - The Ellsworth American

GSA seeking a tuition increase from towns
BLUE HILL  George Stevens Academy is seeking a tuition increase of $1,000 per student from towns on the peninsula that send students to the semi-private secondary school.
Head of School Tim Seeley explained that GSA must abide by what the Maine Department of Education sets for a tuition rate, which currently is $12,000 a student. “What towns are voting on is agreeing to add $1,000 to that number.”
“The average cost to educate a student is over $16,000,” Seeley said. “We just can’t maintain a fullservice high school with programs for every student on the peninsula, which is our mission,” on the stateset tuition rate. ....

Fishing derby sees record turnout - The Ellsworth American

Fishing derby sees record turnout
DEER ISLE The annual Slim’s Fishing Derby, held the weekend of Feb. 13-14, saw a record turnout. Organizers attribute that in part to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has people looking for things to do outside.
The derby is held as a fundraiser for scholarships in memory of Jimmy “Slim” Douglass, who died in a snowmobile accident in Deer Isle in 2008. The volunteer firefighter was 26.
Organizer Jesse Larrabee said 520 people participated, which is “130 more than our biggest year.”
“It is in line with what the game wardens had mentioned,” Larrabee said. “A lot of families and kids are outdoors because there’s nowhere else to go.” ....

New Surry classroom is kid-approved - The Ellsworth American

New Surry classroom is kid-approved
SURRY Meet the new pandemic classroom, a yurt at the Surry Elementary School.
Yurts are wholeheartedly kid-approved.
“It’s maybe the best idea I ever had,” said Principal Fred Cole. “It’s entirely in response to the COVID-19 physical distancing requirements we have in the schools. We used COVID relief fund money to purchase it.”
“I confess I only had the idea for a yurt because I worked at the Bay School,” Cole said. “I was wondering how we could get some classroom space quickly. It’s impossible to get a good modular, but a yurt might go up quick. We were lucky to get it. To get a yurt right now, they’re talking months out. This company just had a cancellation.” ....
