City Seeks Ideas to Reactivate Baruch Bathhouse Site | The Lo-Down : News from the Lower East Side


The New York City Parks Department is taking the first tentative steps in possibly redeveloping the Baruch Bathhouse, a building that has been shuttered for more than four decades. At a public meeting last week, community members urged city officials to restore the historic structure, New York’s first public bathhouse, as a community center.
During a presentation before Community Board 3’s parks committee, the officials said they’d like to put out a Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEI) for the bathhouse in the the next three weeks or so. An RFEI is less specific and less formal than a Request for Proposals (RFP), and often does not actually lead to a development plan. ....

Warming Centers open amidst frigid temperatures; Outreach organizations ask for donations

VERNON, Conn As temperatures drop many shelters in the Hartford and surrounding areas are opening warming centers, but one shelter in Vernon says more may be needed to help. 
Holiday cheer could be heard as it was seen filling the family room at Cornerstone.  
The family services center has been providing for those in need while sheltering them from the frigid cold as the state is set to single digits.  
“The idea is to get them safe and warm and once they understand that there are people to help them. they’ll let us help them,” said Bryan Flint.  ....

Opposition to East Side Coastal Resiliency Project

It’s been more than a year since the New York City Council approved a $1.45 billion plan to protect Manhattan’s Lower East Side from future flooding, but challenges to the plan have been recently reignited by some who remain opposed to the project. 
Work on the northern portion of the East Side Coastal Resiliency Project, at Asser Levy Playground at East 23rd St., started earlier this month, to get the area ready for construction, according to the New York City Department of Design and Construction. The city said it plans to begin work on the East River Park section of the project, south of East 14th St., by early next year, once bids come back from contractors.  ....
