PSUSD radio show, podcast provide weekly information resource

In addition to its website, social media outlets and direct communication to parents through email or mail, the Palm Springs Unified School District also provides weekly information via a radio show and podcast. They provide listeners with the opportunity to learn about programs, projects and activities within the district as well as partnerships with community organizations. Called “You Learn Something New Every Day,” the show is hosted by this reporter as the District’s Coordinator of Communications and Community Outreach. Begun back in 2013 as a twice-monthly segment as part of a local radio host’s drive-home show, the show has evolved over the past eight years to what is now a weekly show produced by interns in Cathedral City High School’s Digital Arts Technology Academy (DATA). The show airs on Sundays at 6:30 a.m. on 99.1 FM KKGX and 9 a.m. on 92.3FM KWXY and is available as a podcast on iTunes. The podcast can be found at http://bit.ly/wv-schools0122. Those who subs

Social and climate issues top local writing contest

PITTSFORD — Police, climate change and LGBTQ issues were the topics that the winners of the first Brandon Writes contest chose to focus their essays on. Brandon Writes is a contest put on by Michael Shank, of Brandon, who was behind the Brandon Environmental Film Competition. Both are similar in concept. Students in the Brandon area submit films, or in this case pieces of writing, and their work is judged locally with cash prizes awarded by Shank. Taking the $500 first prize was Jazmin Rivera, an eighth-grader at Otter Valley Middle School, who wrote “Inequality of Police Brutality.” Rivera, of Pittsford, won her first essay contest last year after being told about it by her English teacher, Cameron Perta, who makes a habit of informing his students about contest opportunities.
