Chamber presents annual awards to Jefferson County people and businesses that stood out during the challenging COVID year
Michael Baker named Public Servant of the Year
When the public health calamity of the century hit our world, it fell to Jefferson County Public Health Director Michael Baker to steer the community through the crisis.
Jefferson County Commissioner Kelly Simmelink presented Baker with the Public Servant of the Year award at this year s Madras-Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce awards banquet.
Most Jefferson County residents do not know of your 12-14 plus hour days, six and eight days a week since last March, said Simmelink, staying on top of the unknown challenges and planning for the what ifs . ....

Cherokee Nation Businesses announces temporary home for cultural collections, archives


TAHLEQUAH – Cherokee Nation Businesses is beginning work on a temporary new home for the Cherokee Nation’s foremost collection of historic tribal-related documents and cultural artifacts from the 1700s through present day.  
Historically housed at the Cherokee Heritage Center in Park Hill, the items were recently declared in a state of emergency by the Tribal Council because of aging infrastructure and the need for updated environmental controls necessary for proper preservation.
“Responsible stewardship of our tribe’s irreplaceable artifacts means we must invest in world-class archival conservation measures,” Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr said. “We are taking these important, strategic steps in order to ensure long-term preservation. As we continue long-range planning for the Cherokee Heritage Center, we can properly house these rare and historic objects until they are ready to return to their permanent home.”  ....

Owen Ransom Schales., Jr. Oly


Owen cast off his earthly bonds to be with the Lord on March 5, 2021, after struggling with a short illness. He was surrounded by loved ones in his final moments. Owen loved the Lord and was committed to his faith. He was a member of Divine Mercy Catholic Church, attending Mass at The Shaver Lake Catholic Service, where he served as an Usher.
Owen was born on January 22, 1943, to Owen Schales Sr. and Era Murphy Schales, (both deceased) in Hanford. His family was rounded out by two older brothers, C.M. (deceased & wife Clara), and Bobby Schales (wife Ruth) and a younger sister, Janet Schales (Joe Freitas). ....

The Kay County town of Tonkawa is headquarters for the Tonkawa Tribe of Oklahoma, where a museum preserves the tribe’s cultural heritage. This is the site of its former reservation and land allotted to 73 individual tribal members in 1891.
Later governed by a single chief, the Tonkawa people were originally a matrilineal society of extended family clans forming two moieties. Today, tribal matters are guided by a three-member committee elected biannually. ....

Ima Jean Garland (English)


LEXINGTON, NC - Ima Jean Garland (English), was born May 30th, 1934 in North Carolina where she remained a long-time resident. Ima, better known as Jean, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family on March 13, 2021 at the age of 87.
Jean was a woman of many hobbies, she enjoyed dancing, watching Nascar, spending time with her family, playing corn hole and collecting antiques. She was known for her love of nature and animals. Jean loved tending to her numerous plants and found it in her heart to rescue dogs. She was also very fond of feeding the animals from the woods that backed up to her home. ....
