Utah's National Parks Still Bursting With Visitors Despite The Weekend Ending

Memorial Day weekend is typically one of the busiest weekends of the year for Utah’s national parks. This year, the parks are remaining full days past the weekend, which hasn’t been a typical trend in the past.
According to Deseret News, since May 20   with the exception of only one day Arches National Park has had to temporarily close the park until it had additional capacity for new visitors. Arches tweeted Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, warning guests they may need to find an alternative attraction or visit at later times due to the park being completely full.

The situation has been very similar for Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks. Jim Ireland, Bryce Canyon’s Superintendent, says he believes the massive crowds are because “people are anxious to get outside, anxious to get away from home after being in quarantine for so long, and they just want to be out in the parks.” ....

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Oahu’s annual Junior Lifeguard Program attracts a lot of youth to its summer sessions to learn lifeguarding skills.
For years, the North Shore Lifeguards Association has been in charge of it.
“We serve roughly from 1,500 to close to 2,000 kids a summer for free,” NSLA’s Bryan Phillips said.
But for the second straight summer, the program for youth ages 12 to 17 has been canceled. Once again, it’s fallen victim to COVID concerns. ....

Jason Ubay/Hawaii Public Radio
Starting on July 4, the Ewa Beach and Makiki ambulances will expand their services from 12 hours to 24 hours a day, the city announced Monday.
The increased coverage comes as the West O‘ahu community continues to grow. In 2020, the city said its Makiki unit responded to 3,510 calls and its Ewa Beach unit responded to 2,357 within their daily 12-hour shifts.
Additionally, a pilot Community Paramedic Program is expected to start in the next six to 12 months. The program will respond to calls that have less urgency, such as anxiety and hunger pains.
Dr. Jim Ireland, director of Honolulu Emergency Medical Services, explained how the expansion will affect response times. ....
