I don’t think anyone questions that doctors, nurses and other hospital workers involved in caring for patients deserve to be at the front of the line for COVID-19 vaccines.
But what about hospital employees who don’t come face-to-face with patients, work in hospital labs or mop operating room floors?
I’m talking about people in administration, marketing and fundraising to name just a few of the hospital jobs where going to work every day doesn’t significantly increase the risk of contracting the coronavirus more than any other office job. ....

Hereford bypass: Councillor says why he abstained from crucial vote

Ross East councillor Paul Symonds did not initially respond when asked.
However, he now says he voted for the unsuccessful amendment put forward by councillors Jim Kenyon and Bob Matthews which would have allowed members a separate say on the southern link road and Hereford bypass projects.
And he abstained in the subsequent vote to cancel both projects.
The Liberal Democrat councillor says he apologises for not responding sooner.
Coun Symonds said that he abstained because he felt the western bypass was the best option for Hereford but the environmental impact also needed to be considered.
“I supported the amendment but abstained from the main item in the end because, whilst I felt it would undoubtedly be the best option for Hereford, the climate change argument is hard to ignore in terms of the carbon footprint of building a bypass,” he said. ....

Revealed: How councillors voted during the Hereford bypass debate

Because councillors did not call for a named vote, it effectively became a secret ballot.
Ordinarily, when a named vote is not called during a meeting, members of the public and press can still see how councillors vote as they raise their hands to do so.
But meetings are currently held online and broadcast via Youtube due to the coronavirus restrictions.
And the council says the computer software it uses to record votes does not log which way each individual councillor votes it simply shows the total number of votes for, against or abstentions.
In the absence of a named vote, the Hereford Times asked all 52 councillors which way they voted on the motion. ....

With temperatures in the 20s on Sunday morning, heading off on a run, breaking out the snowshoes or bundling up to take the dog for a long walk all seemed like manageable outdoor activities.
But church?
I counted about 30 people who had braved the elements for outdoor Mass at Aquinas House, the Catholic student center, on the Dartmouth campus.
Talk about hardy souls.
The masked parishioners were a mix of Dartmouth students and local residents. Some were wrapped in blankets as they sat in folding metal chairs arranged at safe distances in Aquinas House’s horseshoe-shaped driveway. ....
